Two Common Mistakes When Hiring a Contractor

Imagine you’re ready for a basement remodeling or room addition, and you’re eager to get started. What do you do first? What can you do to help make everything go smoothly?

For a lot of homeowners, one of the first steps is hiring a contractor. There are many contractors vying for your remodeling project, how do you know which one to trust and who to hire?

These two mistakes are by far the most common mistakes homeowners make when looking for a contractor. Knowing these and how to avoid them will make your decision easier and your remodel much better!

#1: Hiring Any Contractor. There are plenty of choices for contractors out there, and if you don’t know what you’re looking for, you’re likely to just go with the first one that looks okay.

A bad contractor can make your remodeling experience a nightmare: incomplete work or extremely slow progress, poor quality craftsmanship, lack of communication. The best way to get a good contractor is to do your research so you can have confidence in your choice.

Before deciding on a contractor, look into them. Check their testimonies, take a look at the work they’ve completed, ask friends and family what they’ve heard about them, check reviews, and look them up in the Better Business Bureau for complaints.

Only when you’re sure a contractor is competent and trustworthy should you push forward with them.

#2: Taking the Lowest Bid. It seems reasonable: you have a big, expensive project, and you want to get the best price. The problem is that price and value are often very different, and it’s fair to ask why a low bidder is bidding low.

There are a lot of reasons a contractor bids significantly lower than their competition, but most of them aren’t good. It’s possible the contractor is new to the business, and in trying to get customers, may low bid. The problem with this is overextending—too many jobs and not enough time or manpower to do them all well.

They might also use poorer quality materials that won’t last in order to give you a lower price, and unfortunately, that costs more in the long run. Be sure the value you’re getting is worth the price when you hire a contractor, and you’ll be a lot happier with the results!
